Frères Borgel (FB) case, significantly, in 1935, Taubert made Patek’s first waterproof case with the ref. 438

The Patek Philippe Calatrava, launched in 1932, is named after the cross used by the Calatrava Knights in Spain and Portugal during the 12th and 13th centuries.

Inspired by the minimalist Bauhaus style, the Calatrava focuses on simplicity, which highlights the craftsmanship behind the watch. Even without technical complications or a busy design, collectors appreciate its clean look and practicality.

The ref. 438, introduced in 1935, is a smaller version of the original Calatrava, with a 28mm case instead of the 31mm used in the ref. 96. Designed to be a slightly sportier watch, it was the first Patek to feature a screw-down caseback, offering some water resistance — a rare feature for dress watches at the time.
